“We chose MA KA QA XEIJ TA QIB, which means “We will not be afraid” in K’iche’, in order to imagine a safe future for indigenous people from Central America and Mexico, and for all. The use of this language is a statement of the survival of Maya people, particularly the K’iche’, who are the majority of the indigenous immigrants from Central America in Los Angeles and in the United States. Writing in this language with smoke on the sky evokes the smoke rituals to communicate with the Gods that were recorded in The Popol Vuh, the ancient sacred text of the Maya K’iche’.”
